Story

New York bartender John O'Connor was tinkering with a dry Martini one night in 1901 at the Waldorf Astoria when he grabbed an olive and its brine off the bar and dropped both in. FDR became the drink's most famous fan, favoring a 2:1 gin-and-vermouth with olive brine that he reportedly introduced to Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin -- giving rise to an apocryphal tale that the Dirty Martini was truly born at Yalta, when Churchill produced a private stash of olives to cure Stalin's hangover cure of choice: vodka and pickle juice.
