Story

The Dirty Martini traces back to 1901, when Waldorf Astoria bartender John O'Connor dropped an olive and a splash of its brine into a dry Martini. FDR made the drink famous with his preferred 2:1 gin-and-vermouth ratio and a generous pour of olive brine -- gin, not vodka, was the original spirit here, even though vodka has since become the more common modern default.
