Story
Unless you're Dominican, live in a Dominican neighborhood, or have wandered well outside the all-inclusive resorts, there's a good chance you've never run into Mamajuana. It started as an alcohol-free herbal tea brewed by the Taino long before Columbus; rum and red wine got added later, and it's been steeped with tree bark, roots, and honey ever since. The drink is credited with all sorts of claimed benefits -- digestion, circulation, a cure for the flu -- but the one that stuck hardest is sexual potency, which is exactly why it goes by "the Baby Maker" (or, less subtly, "Dominican Viagra") as often as it goes by its real name. None of that is medically proven. People order it anyway.
